MINING INDUSTRY COMMITTED TO SUPPORT NATIONAL COVID-19 VACCINE ROLL-OUT EFFORT

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive impact on the world and South Africa, and is not only a humanitarian crisis but has also sent significant economic shock waves through the global and local economies. There is no doubt that access to an effective vaccine and the significant roll-out of a vaccination programme (‘shots in arms’) is crucial in the fight against COVID-19, to help re-open the economy in order to save lives and save livelihoods. Matla mine relocation

Relocating Following 42 years of operating at Matla Mine, Exxaro Resources’ executive decided to relocate the Mine 1 operation, which has been on care and maintenance since 2016, due to safety concerns. By Dineo Phoshoko The Matla Mine 1 relocation project is a capital project of Eskom at Exxaro’s Matla Mine, which involves the construction of a new decline shaft to gain access to the remaining economical two-seam coal reserves. The relocation project also includes plans to supply Mine 1 with five complete suites of underground continuous mining equipment and equipment used to construct supporting infrastructure, interseams between Mine 2 and Mine 3, and a ventilation shaft to supply fresh air to Mine 3’s future production areas. The project commenced in August 2020 and is expected to be completed during the second half of 2023.

IMPACT AND SUPPORT TO EXXARO ESD BENEFICIARIES DURING COVID-19

The restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown have taken a toll on all economic sectors in South Africa, and have presented additional hurdles for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). A survey undertaken by the Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE) on the readiness of South African small enterprises to respond to Covid-19 implications in March 2020, revealed that 86% did not know where to go to access emergency funding, 87% were unable run their business from home and 87% were unable to support themselves or their families during the lockdown. These findings are in line with the business impact survey of the Covid-19 pandemic in South Africa, conducted by Statistics South Africa in April 2020.
